People always ask me – “Have you done this all your life”? It didn’t make any difference what stage of life I was at, it is always the same question. If you are wondering, “Have I Done This All My Life”, I will tell you if you have a little time. I have tried many endeavors during my 81 years of life, as most people have. My interests have usually been in the arts, so they show more openly than other peoples hobbies and passions. People always tell me how talented I am. I Thank them and remind them that we all have talents. It’s just that most people don’t display their passions through art, poetry and music. They are just as gifted, but in less visible areas. So never feel intimated by another’s work, just enjoy and remember that you are also gifted in areas that may not be as easily displayed. You can just be a great Mom, a good friend, or a wonderful husband and contribute and share with the world just as much as any famous artist!

The creative part of my life starts with our move from the suburbs of Cleveland to the family farm in Marietta, Ohio in 1981.

We decided to leave the hustle of the big city and live in the quiet, beautiful rolling hills of Southern Ohio.

I have always enjoyed music and wondered what made things work when I was young. I loved to build things out of scraps of wood and take things apart. Unfortunately, I didn’t always get them put back together correctly! I began music lessons, when I was six, on the piano and accordion. Later, I learned to play alto saxophone and clarinet. I never had a great interest in drawing or art in my early years. I liked math and was still wondering how things worked, so I became a mechanical engineer. I graduated from Carnegie Tech (before it became a Mellon) in l966. I worked as an engineer for the next 15 years. It was after I married my ex, in 1979, that my first creative dream came true. I had always wanted to learn how to do wood turning. So he bought me a Shopsmith. The wood chips flew and I took some workshops. I had dreams of making a living as a woodturner. So we decided, to leave the big city, and our good jobs, and move to Marietta on the family farm. A simple life where I could do wood turning.

After doing a lot of fancy turning and art & craft shows, I learned how to make cedar eggs. They sound simple, but they really took a lot of skill to make. We would start with 2 1/2″ by 2 1/2″ by 5″ blocks of aromatic, red cedar. Then screw the block onto the lathe and start turning. The completed egg would be finished with a fine burnishing cut with a gouge, then have the ends cut off with a skew and it would drop into your hand finished. My ex also learned how to make eggs. We ran a wholesale business making and selling cedar eggs to stores and galleries. We often made more than 30,000 eggs a year. We made cedar eggs until 1989.

Finally, even though we made good money, we got BORED. I sold the company and we both went back to real jobs.

We also moved from the farm in the country to a nice house in the city of Marietta. Mind you, Marietta, is a city of 15,000, so it is not like a big city. A charming, wonderful town with brick streets and nicely kept historic buildings. Lots of friendly folk, too! See, I told you this is not the big city. Just beautiful rolling hills of the Appalachians.

Your can’t keep a budding artist down, so I quit my engineering type job, again, and opened a store demonstrating and selling my handmade cedar eggs and ornaments. Marietta is a beautiful town with lots of tourist in the summer, but the winters are long. Not very cold or snowy, but long. So what little money that is made in the summer, is lost from lack of business during the long, cold months. So, after four years, I closed my store.

Before I closed my store, I started to learn how to blow glass over a torch. This process is call lampglass work. Glass rods are melted over a torch and the molten glass is shaped while the glass is still soft and workable. I had fun making lots of animals. I finally felt that I was truly being creative.

Life always has a few surprises in store for you. Just as I was starting to do art shows and wholesaling my glass work, I found out that the bright light and heat from the torch was bothering my eyes. The eye doctor said he saw white blisters in my eyes – “What are you doing?” “Blowing Glass” , said I. Well, if you don’t stop, you are going to start to lose your sight. Well, isn’t that the way. You find something you really like to do and have to quit. I wore the proper glasses and took all the precautions, but for some reason it still bothered my eyes. Oh, well. Here comes the art part. I always had a thought that I would like to learn how to paint. Well, at fifty years old, I started on the path to becoming an artist.

I took my first oil painting class, like all aspiring artist do, in the winter of ’95. Then took private watercolor lessons, for one and one half years, from a very talented artist, Lee Fritch, in West Virginia. Thanks to him, I almost received a college education in art . He is an extremely educated artist who is able to explain and teach his craft. Many, many thanks to Lee. I certainly would be back in the early stages of learning if it hadn’t been for him.

Since then I have painted a lot of animals, dogs and landscapes. I love to go outside and paint on location. It’s also great fun to go to the zoo to sketch and paint. I find the animals have a lot to say. I have painted close to 400 paintings and I have found some of them really had a lot to say. So, for some reason, I began writing poetry to go with the paintings. I have found the two to be very complimentary.

My ex and I also played a lot of live music since we moved to Marietta. We played with the Doug Hess Big Band and his other groups. Played in some musicals and also with a local orchestra. We were known as the Good Time Two and played as a duo during the 1980’s and 1990’s. We played at the Keg Room, American Legion and often, on the levee. This video shows photos of us playing.

I didn’t play accordion for years after my divorce, but bought a great Roland FR 4X digital accordion in 2020. I have been playing again and making videos for the last few years. A lot of older music that I grew up with. I have over 500 videos on my YouTube Channel.

It seems we never know what life has in store for us. I have told my story to help inspire those of you who have a dream, but never acted on it. It is amazing how much talent is hidden in all of us. We just need to let go a little, be bold, be a little creative and let the talent out. Find your passion and enjoy it. It’s never too late.

Pat’s Cats That Have Passed On

Daisy 2002 – 2018

Mr. Spots was very lonely in 2002 when Squirt passed away. So I choose Daisy, from the shelter, to be his friend. She is a very friendly little girl and seems to enjoy not only Mr. Spots – but all 12 dogs. She is always in the dogs fenced area visiting with them!

2005 – 2015 Mommy Cat

Mommy Cat was Twinkie’s Mom. We fostered her and her 3 kittens in August of 2005. Two of her kittens found new homes and Twinkie found a home at Rainbow Bridge. She loves our other cats and our dogs. She is a great hunter!

Mr. Spots 1998 – 2012

Showed up the summer of 2001. Straggly, skinny and matted. Someone dumped him. He is very affectionate and likes dogs and other cats. Loved Muffin. Took care of her all summer until she found her new home.

Twinkie 2005

Twinkie and her 2 brothers were fosters at our house in August. The 2 brothers grew
fine and found new homes. Poor little Twinkie was blind, crippled and never grew in 2 1/2 months. We are not sure what was wrong, but she is in Kitty Heaven now. We hope she can see and run like a little kitten should at Rainbow Bridge. Be at peace – little one!

Peaches 1985 – 2003

A present left by a wandering cat when we lived on the farm. She has become a city cat. She had a brother, Willie, that died a few years ago. We all still miss him. Peaches lived with us for 18 years. We will always remember her, too.

Squirt 1987 – 2002

Showed up at our house several days after we moved in – never left. She was married to Willie. Never has gotten over his passing. She has Mr. Spots now, but really has no room left in her heart for a new boyfriend.

Willie 1985 – 1997

Peaches brother. Both were left as presents by a wandering cat on the farm. He was a very affectionate cat. We loved him very much. He died from diabetes. We gave him shots everyday – but guess we just couldn’t win.

Muffin

Spent the summer of 2001 with us. We found her on the sidewalk downtown when she was about 5 weeks old. She was a wonderful kitty, but did not get along with Squirt. So we found her a new home.

As you can see – Peaches isn’t all that crabby. Here she joins us at the table asking for a snack. We don’t normally allow her to sit at the table with us – if we did, we would have
12 jealous dogs there, too!

People always ask me, what I do and why I do it. So I have created a couple pages about my life, interests, accordion music and my pets.

Pat's Story About Her Journey Through a Very Interesting Life

Pat's Accordion Music

I played in big bands, concert bands and orchestras most of my life. I played alto saxophone, clarinet and flute. I also loved accordion since I grew up in Cleveland and often heard polka bands. I took my first lesson in 1951 – many years ago! My ex and I had a duo we called “The Good Time Two.” We played dances, lounges and often outdoors.

Since half of the Good Time Two is gone, I play by myself. I played an electronic accordion with many organ sounds and orchestra sounds in the old days. It weighed 29 pounds and at 75, I am not able to lift it any longer. So I bought a Roland FR 4X which is a virtual accordion and weighs only 19 pounds. It has no reeds, only sampled sounds. Wonderful accordion, organ and orchestra sounds.

People always ask to hear my accordion music, so I posted some. I will add new music after I get use to the fancy new, accordion.

Beau Arrives July 26, 2022

Sweetie needed a brother so I found Beau who was about 3 1/2 months old. They bonded immediately and play all day in between napping. They are true brother and sister now. Sweetie was lonely without Buddy.

June 4, 2022 Buddy finds a new home with Jane.

I had Buddy 5 months and by the time he was over 70 pounds, he was a lot for me to handle. I wished I could find him a home with younger people. Jane lost her 2 goldens around Christmas and was devastated. She meet Buddy and fell in love. He lives on a big farm with a Golden Brother Winston and I get to visit him.

Sweetie Arrived on May 24, 2022

Buddy played so well with our neighbor’s 4 month old Corgi, I thought he should have a playmate of his own. So I found a really cute 4 month old Corgi that I named Sweetie. They bonded immediately and played most the day between naps.

I picked Buddy up on January 1, 2022 when he was 8 weeks old. He is an English Cream Golden Retriever. I was devastated when I lost both Peanut and Chloe within 2 months of each other. I thought I would start with a puppy. LOL

Chloe Arrived July 31, 2020 Peanut’s new little sister. Adopted from Humane Society of Parkersburg. This is her before photo and a new spa photo to follow. I adopted her to be company for Peanut after all this other doggie buddies passed away. He is not interested in her at all!

Peanut 2010-2021

Peanut showed up at my gate on Nov. 20, 2012. He was trying to get in the gate with the Digger Brothers. He had been attacked and had puncture wounds, fleas in his eyes, infection of his rear end, long nails and starved at only 9 pounds. It took 7 days at the vets and surgery to pull him thru.

Bingo 2011 – 2021

Bingo was my neighbors dog. She was also my dog sitter. She was very, very sick. I took her dog to take care of him until she got better. Unfortunately, she moved in with her daughter and could no longer keep him. So he has become the guardian of my gang.

Sweetie- Dalmatian Mix 2001 – 2020

Oh no – it happened again. Poor Sweetie. She was found in a field starving and lived a couple weeks at the Humane Society. She kept getting picked over for those small fuzzy cute puppies. Pat and Sweetie fell in love – end of story. Benny has also fallen in love with her since she has joined the Walter Family.

Nikki – The Springer Mix Puppy 2005 – 2020

We pulled Nikki from a high kill shelter in Athens OH in Mid March of 2005. The purpose was to save her life and send her to rescue. Since most of the rescue fosters were full, we ended up fostering her. She is still with us and feels this is home.

Fritz & Sluggo – The Digger Brothers 2005 – 2018

Fritz fell out of his kennel at the shelter and fractured his rear leg. He was going to be put down since the shelter does not have money to treat injured animals. I received an email and we decided to help Fritz. He came from a litter of 6 puppies. Sluggo, his brother, had infected feet and could not walk properly. So we brought them both home to take care of them. There is very little call for black hound dog mixes at the shelter, so
we have decided to keep them.

Two Little Pups – about the digger Brothers

2002 – 2017 Charlie – The Springer Spaniel

Lived at the Humane Society for three weeks and got very sick with Kennel Cough. We took him to the vet, since the shelter has little medicine, and then brought him home to get well. He loves living with the other 10 dogs. He was supposed to go to rescue – but he already feels that he is part of the family. He is learning to be a house dog. He thinks it is great fun being in a house. He has a wonderful personality.

2001 – 2013 Sparky – Border Collie

Sparky was very sick and needed medical care which the shelter could not give him.. He is now well and a very lovable dog. He is learning how to live in a house and house manners. He is a very beautiful dog with a beautiful soul.

2001-2011 Robbie – The Blind Sheltie

Robbie has joined the Walter household. He was at the shelter frozen in fear after he was picked up as a stray. He is settling in and learning many new commands. He can walk on a leash and jump in and out of the car without any help. He is a very smart little guy. To our great surprise, he seems to enjoy living with 11 other dogs and has learned to live with 3 cats. He is a real sweetie and a joy to be around. He always has a smile on his face. His favorite game is playing tag in the yard, running full speed with Sweetie.

2004-2011 Katie – The Crippled Aussie

Katie has joined the Walter doggie family, she makes it a bakers dozen! Pat worked at the local shelter as an assistant manager for a few months and wanted to save poor little Katie. She looked like she was hit by a car. We have found out since, she was born crippled and will unfortunately stay that way. The orthopedic vets can not perform any fancy operations to make her walk like a normal dog. But she still enjoys life hopping around and joyfully playing.

1995-2010 Lucky – The Aussie

Lucky was a foster with us about 1 1/2 years ago when he was turned into our local shelter. He found a home and in the summer of 2004, his family was no longer able to keep him. So he is back with us again. We are still trying to find him a new home, but he thinks he belongs here by now. So we will include him in our family doggie album.

1997 – 2010 Buddy – Collie Mix

Found in the middle of Front Street trying to direct traffic when he was six months old. Number 5 of the Walter Pack. Known better as the “Love Child” since his birthday is about February 14 and lives up to his name. Another Collie sweetie!

The one dog Pat actually bought because she wanted to know what the dog would look like when she grew up. Number 6 of the Walter Pack. Tries to herd the rest around – doesn’t work with a real Border Collie, a wanna be Border Collie, one mixed Collie and a Fox Terrier Mix who is boss of everyone.

PJ’s Story

1993 – 2009 Pepper – Golden Irish Setter Mix

Number 4 of the Walter Pack. Came to live with her brother and sister 1 1/2 years after they lived with Pat. She always came over to visit, so her Mom decided she really wanted to live with us and allowed her to choose.

1993 – 2007 Kelley – Golden Hound Mix

Number 1 of the Walter Pack The first chosen from the box of puppies. Yes – the four are all definitely related and had the same Mom. As to the Fathers – a few must have been involved due to the variety of the family!

1993 – 2006 Clancy – Golden Irish Setter Mix

Number 3 of the Walter Pack. Clancy and his four other brothers and sisters were found in a box by the road out in the country by Pat’s neighbor. Of course, a few of the puppies had to come live at Pat’s house. Clancy and Pepper appear to be twins, at least to us.

Number 2 of the Walter Pack. Sister to Clancy, Pepper and Kelley. Found in that same box out in the country. A very talkative Irish Setter Mix.

I lived at the shelter
I waited and hoped
that soon I’d be adopted

The months went on
I would whine and cry
the end was near
soon I would die.
I tried to look cute
I would bark and dance

Molly

We don’t know how old she is
or where she was born.
One ear has been injured
her teeth quite worn.
Her heart consumes her total being
the love and joy you can’t help seeing.
She nuzzles and licks, hugs and talks
goes absolutely crazy if you speak of walks.
She lived at the shelter in a dirty old cage
the lonely conditions brought no rage.
She shares her love and brings us joy

Sweetie

Curled in my lap
our afternoon nap
a little ball of fur
happy and sure.
Weeks ago
you wouldn’t know
a little lost soul
no where to go.
Alone at night
no one in sight
a frightened little puppy
not feeling lucky.
They took her to the pound
she thought she was found
but no one choose her
wrong color fur.
She hugged and kissed
but seem to miss
finding a home
a place to roam.
But soon came a friend
someone that could bend
feeling love in her heart
they just couldn’t part.

Charlie

The black and white spaniel
Charlie, Chuck or Chas
he’s always smiling
it’s a little grin that he has.
A stray at large
tossed in a truck
ends up at the shelter
not good luck.
He’s so much trouble
barking and complaining
the staff ignores him
only a few days remaining.
No one cares
he’s coughing and sick
tries to look cute
but he’s no ones pick.
He caught Pat’s eye
gave big wet kisses
he really worked hard
to convey his wishes.
On the road to recovery
he went to the vet
soon a member of the family
she’s glad they met.

She Never Came Home

Adopted in heart and mind alone
because she really
never came home.
Taken from the shelter
sick and thin
trying to get her well again.
Time at the vets
a few visits alone, a week went by
but she never came home.
They treated and bathed her
the sad eyes shone
but she really never ever came home.
Her time was up, she wasn’t alone
but she really never got to come home.
